Feel the force with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra's The Music Of Star Wars
John Williams's epic sci-fi scores will be performed live in three unforgettable May concerts
Fans of the Star Wars saga, iconic film scores or classical music are in for a real treat later this year as the Royal Scottish National Orchestra give us The Music Of Star Wars. This trio of unmissable spring concerts celebrate the genius of the multi-Oscar-winning composer John Williams and continue the RSNO's triumphant return to live music. They aim to transport you to a galaxy far, far away as your favourite themes from the legendary sci-fi series are performed with gusto.
Whether you prefer A New Hope, The Phantom Menace or The Last Jedi, the whole series will be represented in force for every generation of your family, and it's a fantastic opportunity for fans of the films to see their beloved scores performed in person. The show will kick off at Usher Hall in Edinburgh on Friday 6 May, before moving on to Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Saturday 7 May and, finally, Caird Hall, Dundee on Sunday 8 May, with tickets on sale now.
An incomparable figure in the history of film scores, the prolific Williams recently celebrated his 90th birthday, which was marked with a pair of RSNO tribute concerts. He is the recipient of 25 Grammy Awards, seven BAFTAs, five Academy Awards (from a remarkable 52 nominations) and four Golden Globes. While his musical contributions to the Star Wars franchise may arguably be his most famous achievement, with scores for Jaws, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, Superman, E.T. , Jurassic Park and Harry Potter amongst the others, it's certainly a competitive field.
The RSNO is one of Europe's leading orchestras and has played an important part in Scotland's musical life since its foundation in 1891, with Royal patronage awarded in 1977. The orchestra appears regularly at the Edinburgh International Festival and the BBC Proms and performed at the opening ceremony of the Scottish Parliament building in 2004. Their artistic team is led by Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård, who was appointed RSNO Music Director in 2018.
The event will be presented by a real expert in the artform, BBC Radio 3's Tom Redmond, who has introduced classical music to over 250,000 young people and their families through a series of interactive concerts and who is involved with the BBC's Ten Pieces project, leading creative workshops with celebrity ambassadors and acting as an orchestra consultant. Tom has an impressive background in music having travelled the world as a horn player with the City of Birmingham and London Symphony orchestras, amongst others.
For this concert, the orchestra will be led by popular conductor Stephen Bell. Bell studied at the Royal College of Music under the renowned conductor Norman Del Mar. He was appointed Artistic Director of the City of Oxford Orchestra in 2009 and Associate Conductor of the Hallé Pops in 2013. Stephen spent several years conducting the annual BBC Proms In The Park with the BBC Philharmonic and appears yearly on the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra's Last Night Of The Proms celebrations.
