This August is festival season, as ever, and Edinburgh will doubtless continue to be Scotland's city of choice for the end of summer. But Glasgow's giving it the old college try, with another stellar lineup of headliners for the Summer Nights at Kelvingrove Bandstand concerts.

The concerts kick off with local boys-and-girl Texas (Wed 2 Aug), whose ninth studio album Jump On Board is coming out on 21 Apr. The following day's concert brings us firmly into living legend territory: Brian Wilson continues his 50th Anniversary of Pet Sounds world tour with a performance of his best-loved album and other hits from his long career.

KT Tunstall takes the stage on Fri 4 Aug. On Sun 6 Aug, it's the turn of South Africa's most famous band Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Joseph Shabalala and his crew have been spellbinding audiences with their extraordinary harmony singing since the mid-60s, and they're now entering their sixth decade with the leader still out front.

Boston's Pixies, not so much a band as an ongoing experiment in the creative potential of noncommunicative passive-aggression, get two nights to themselves on Mon 7 and Tue 8 Aug. Bassist-since-2013 Paz Lenchantin seems to have the right temperament to stand in Kim Deal's spot, possibly because Lenchantin has played with more bands than the Pixies have made albums. On Wed 9 Aug the headliner is Californian bluesman Seasick Steve.

On Thu 10 Aug, it's as if Summer Nights had decided that the grandparents had done enough babysitting for one week: Nick Lowe, Paul Carrack and Andy Fairweather Low share the bill. The Shires bring their hugely successful country stylings on Fri 11 Aug: the duo's second album My Universe is the fastest selling UK country album ever.

Sat 12 Aug sees the return of be-quiffed Glasgow new wavers Hipsway, after their successful reunion in November 2016. Finally, on Sun 13 Aug, Arab Strap bring their own gruff, placename-checking back catalogue to round off Summer Nights on a suitably end-of-the-holidays note.
