9 of the best food destinations near the SEC

El Jefe’s
1166–1170 Argyle Street
A Mexican for the young team, doing big, loaded soft tacos including baja fish or slow-cooked lamb with mint, as well as nachos, dirty fries and burritos. And of course, numerous iterations of sweet and spicy Margaritas. Nowhere else in town does a Mexican Sunday roast.

Frank’s Pizzeria
6 Claremont Street
Walk-ins only at this low-key, NY-style joint where the pizzas are big, thin and pleasingly crispy of crust. It’s a swift in-and-out affair if you need it to be, too: no alcohol licence, a small menu of just five ‘fresh, hot pies’ as well as a couple of sides including buffalo chicken that’s equally tangy and spicy.

India Quay
181 Finnieston Street
India Quay is in a great location if you’re heading to the SEC complex, literally across the road. The menu has a broad appeal, from elegant, dependable versions of old-school favourites like karahis and bhoonas, through to modern Glasgow classics like tandoori salmon or garlic chilli chicken.

Meze Meze
1032 Argyle Street
Even if it’s pouring down outside, Meze Meze will raise your spirits with its resplendent Middle Eastern décor. Despite the name, it’s not all about the small plates at this Turkish and Persian ocakbasi (‘by the fire’). Dishes like kaburga tarak (lamb ribs on the bone) are charred and chewy, fatty yet tender; only a skilful charcoal grill can get it just right. Mint, tomato and chilli all just seem to pop more here.

Pickled Ginger
512 St Vincent Street
Sushi before the gig? There’s two pages’ worth on the menu here, as well as all the best-known and most-loved dishes of Japanese cuisine, executed with precision: katsu curry, tempura, gyoza and ramen all do a turn. It’s a slick operation, well-geared towards those busy event nights over the way.

Yakitori Shack
1126 Argyle Street
Yakitori that’s sexy, cheap and cheerful from the team behind Ramen Dayo. A neon feast of grilled bavette steak, chicken thigh and lots of interesting veggie options awaits. Try their cult favourite peanut butter noodles.

Also try… Lebowski’s for burgers and White Russians, Silla for Korean rice, noodles and pancakes, or Strip Joint for decent pizza and the best soundtrack on the Finnieston strip.
