The latest venture by longstanding Edinburgh restaurateur Iggy Campos, Cata is a cool, contemporary space with a menu focused around Spanish wine, tapas and pintxos. Cheese and charcuterie boards are generous enough for a long evening of picking, or go for morcilla with apple or salty, smoky padrón peppers.
Cowan & Sons
33 Raeburn Place
Breakfast and brunch staples are served with care and attention at this busy spot. Gooey cheese toasties are accompanied by the fruity tang of homemade chutneys and chilli jams and there’s no way you’ll leave hungry after the full breakfast. Cakes and bakes entice from the window and their cinnamon buns are particularly good.
The Pastry Section
86 Raeburn Place
It’s nearly impossible to walk past the Pastry Section’s window without salivating at the cakes on display. Cupcakes are cute as a button and tasty to boot, but you can’t go wrong with anything topped with the lightest, fluffiest Italian meringue, especially the rich chocolate brownie.
Purslane

A five or seven-course tasting menu is the only dinner option at Purslane, leaving you in the very capable hands of chef and owner Paul Gunning. The menu changes seasonally but is always an ode to Scottish produce and fine French technique, with haggis and whisky sauce making a regular appearance. Lunch is à la carte.

The £8 Negronis might encourage you in, but the food is just as worthy of pilgrimage to this trendy trattoria. With only three pasta dishes and three mains to choose from, each dish has been finely tuned until faultless. Space books up fast, but the communal table is always kept available for walk-ins.
Stockbridge Eating House

There’s no indication you’re in the right place, save for a pin on Google Maps as the building still bears Bell’s Diner signage, making Stockbridge Eating House feel like a local secret. Simplicity is the watchword here with vast sharing dishes like entire roast chicken or John Dory served at ramshackle communal tables.
Also try… with an additional handful of finer dining restaurants, Stockbridge can feel like Edinburgh’s poshest patch. But you can still find value for your money at Sabor Criollo, a basement Venezuelan restaurant serving arepas and South American classics. Or, there’s Michelin-level small plates at Skua’s dark and dramatic basement space or stop into Mootz Deli for a massive sandwich that will fuel you for the entire day
