Having supported Katherine Ryan on tour and taking the runners-up rosette home from the Funny Women competition of 2014, Lauren Pattison looks set for fame down the line. At just 22 years old, she has plenty time to work on the rougher edges of her act but the signs are strong that she could eventually capture the imagination in the same way that her Geordie predecessor Sarah Millican has. But as the latter's hard-fought ride to stratospheric success showed, hard work and patience is the key.

In a comedy world where making yourself palatable to an audience is viewed as crucial, Pattison is certainly honest enough to not make herself seem like a wholly sympathetic person. The tale of her being excessively mean to a flatmate (and ex-partner) seems an odd one to throw in right at the death, letting a crowd leave with a possible bad taste in the mouth. A better strategy might be to chuck it in earlier and give the audience time to forgive you (or collect some better material and ditch the routine altogether).

Her best moments arrived with an observation of the bad behaviour inherent in Ladies Day at the races and why her bad language really shouldn't cause any offence in a truly shocking world. Hailing from the iconic Newcastle area of Byker, Pattison has plenty time to make her mistakes and become the comic that her early promise is hinting at.
