Ten new galleries open at the National Museum of Scotland

Major redevelopment of the Edinburgh attraction dedicated to science, technology, art, design and fashion

Following a £14.1 million redevelopment the National Museum of Scotland is set to open ten new galleries on Fri 8 Jul, the latest phase in a planned £80 redevelopment of the iconic museum in the heart of Edinburgh.

The new space will house over 3000 objects with six of the galleries focusing on Science and Technology. Highlights include part of the CERN Large Electron Positron Collider, three Formula 1 cars (including David Coulthard’s Red Bull team car), an Apple 1, a bionic arm, one of John Logie Baird’s earliest televisions and a new atrium featuring iconic aircraft such as Percy Pincher’s Hawk (the earliest British aircraft) and a 1940 Tiger Moth biplane.

The other four galleries showcase Art, Design and Fashion from ceramics, furniture, sculpture and woodwork to designer labels. The innovative new Fashion and Design space will feature a 'catwalk' with clothes from Vivienne Westwood, Paco Rabanne and Comme des Garçons on display.

The galleries will also feature new hands-on activities, interactive displays and learning experiences with a full programme of events to accompany and explore the new exhibits.

'It is fitting that in this, our 150th anniversary year, we unveil the latest phase in the transformation of the National Museum of Scotland,' explains Gordon Rintoul, Director of National Museums Scotland. 'These ten major new galleries aim to excite and engage our visitors both today and for generations to come. I look forward to welcoming people to the galleries and hope they will enjoy their visits and be inspired by our exceptional collections and innovative displays.'

This £14.1 million project is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), Wellcome and the Scottish Government, alongside major trusts, foundations and nearly 800 generous individual donors.

The new galleries are open to the public at the Scottish National Museum, Edinburgh, from Fri 8 Jul.
