Alex MacKeith: Thanks For Listening ★★★☆☆

‘What are the worst five words that a straight, white, cis, middle-class man with a guitar can say to you?’ jests Alex MacKeith. The answer? ‘I wrote you a song.’ His snappy self-aware numbers make for a fresh and funny hour with material exploring everything from his innermost anxieties to why he refuses to give up his seat on the bus (two things that have more correlation than they seem).

Endearingly humble, the 2020 Musical Comedy Awards winner takes us on an acid trip through the very inside of his brain. Quick, funny and relatable, this comedian-musician combines ridiculous stories with catchy melodies that have his audience singing along at more than one point in the set. He’s scared of public transport and doesn’t trust the banks. He hates wellness culture and encourages us all to drink water from the Thames (for some reason). An array of wonderfully random topics tie together with some well-timed call-backs that complete his current and candid collection of comedy-tunes.

Sometimes with a dryer delivery, he playfully touches on politics and darker themes, while keeping the overall atmosphere light and breezy. Covering everything from advertising to mental illness, MacKeith’s show is a must for millennials.

Underbelly Bristo Square, until 28 August, 2.45pm.
