Amy Annette: Say What You Like About Me comedy review – Likeable but jumbled
Earnest millennial humour misses the mark

You’ll certainly learn a few things in Say What You Like About Me, but you may not laugh quite as much. Amy Annette hurtles through a collection of anxieties at breakneck pace, covering everything from being the sweatiest woman on the planet to British-isms, body image and the absurd state of the world. There are a few decent lines peppered throughout, and Annette has a likeable and energetic onstage presence, but the hour feels more like a jumbled collection of ‘how crazy is this, right?’ thoughts than a coherent show.
This is Annette’s third hour in as many years and it feels as though she may have used up her best material on the previous two. A routine about Dolly Parton’s contribution to the Moderna vaccine, followed by a rendition of ‘Jolene’ retitled as ‘Vaccine’, isn’t quite cutting edge six years after the fact. Nor is a routine about Katy Perry going to space. The fun facts are genuinely enjoyable, but they’re more memorable than the show itself. Whether you enjoy novelty inflections on words is a matter of personal taste, but they shouldn’t act as a substitute for jokes. Annette certainly has plenty to say but, unfortunately, not enough to make this a cohesive hour.
