Andrew Doherty: Gay Witch Sex Cult comedy review – Lightweight satanic fare

Previously of sketch comedy duo Megan alongside rising star Ambika Mod, Andrew Doherty’s solo bow is a winningly camp, late-night homage to the folk horror of films such as The Wicker Man and Midsommar. As the exclamatory narcissist Kaelan Trough, he’s revelling in the smug, bourgeoisie anticipation of the upcoming gender reveal party for his newborn child with his husband, so never mind all that unmentionable trouble he’s had with a gay witch sex cult.

Gossipingly engaging, Trough’s self-obsession blinds him to the import of the events that led him here and action skips back and forth between the present day and a creepy island off Norfolk where was sent as a real estate agent. Despite his obliviousness, audiences will intuit the rough direction of the plot and to an extent even the coup de theatre with which things take their most sinister turn. Still, there’s fun in following the puckish Doherty on the journey, capably bringing to life the scares with an almost complete absence of supporting cast or props. Essentially an hour-long display of hubris realised, it’s lightweight fare despite the satanic overtones, with a delight in the macabre that fans of The League Of Gentlemen and Tarot will recognise.
