The pub I’ve chosen is The Lismore in Partick because it’s built for every possible occasion. First things first: it pours the crispest pint of Tennent’s known to mankind. You can wander in solo, hide away in a dark wee corner and pretend you’re a tortured writer, or arrive with a massive group ready to sample enough whisky to make your memories non-existent. Outside, you can sit and observe the wonder of Partick locals in their natural habitat (ideally narrated in full Attenborough voice). The toilets are tiny, especially the cubicles, but I simply choose to imagine I’m doing my business at 30,000 feet on a budget airline, so it adds to the adventure. Summer or winter, celebrations or heartbreak, pre-drinks or nightcaps, The Lismore always delivers. And to top it all off, they serve the glorious and universally adored 35ml measure. Honestly, it’s Partick hospitality at its absolute finest.
Matthew Gallagher hosts Mon In, Monday 22 June; his work-in-progress is on Saturday 18 July; both shows at The Stand, Glasgow.
