Part of BBC Arts' Culture in Quarantine, listeners can enjoy four lunchtime recitals

After all these weeks of lockdown, live performance of classical music in the concert hall is at last returning to Scotland. For the first time since it quite simply wasn't possible, world class Scottish artists appear on the stage of Glasgow's City Hall in four performances over Tuesday 14–Friday 17 July.

Part of BBC Arts' Culture in Quarantine, the concerts follow the same format as London's Lockdown Live from London's Wigmore Hall in June. But don't think just yet of calling the box office for a ticket. In accordance with social distancing, there will be no in situ audience, with the artists playing to an auditorium that's completely empty apart from the microphones set up for Radio 3 live broadcast. For pianist Steven Osborne, who has spent lockdown at home in Edinburgh with his 'workhorse' instrument, 'the really exciting thing is to play a real piano. I know that the first chord I'll play will feel absolutely incredible.'

After a couple of streamed concerts from his Kawai in a carpeted living room, getting ahead with new repertoire, online teaching beamed across the world and daily exercise of local walks, Osborne is now reminded of the first time he played, age 10, at the Wigmore Hall when auditioning for a music school scholarship. 'I'll never forget the shock of the sensuousness of sound,' he says, 'and I'm half-expecting that feeling again.'

The music he has chosen to play on City Hall's Steinway on Wed 15 July not only fits the neat hour-long span of the broadcast, but focusses on one of his – and many listeners' º cherished composers, Franz Schubert. 'The B flat Sonata (D960 No 1) is one of my favourite things to play,' he says, 'and I can imagine that it will feel nice and peaceful.' Other performers in the series are singers Michael Mofidian and Thomas Walker, accompanied by Julia Lynch and John Butt respectively, and percussionist Colin Currie.

Radio 3 live broadcast, Glasgow City Halls Recitals, Tue 14–Fri 17 Jul, 1pm.
