The Map of Tiny Perfect Things ★★★★☆

Acknowledging its debt to Groundhog Day from the off, this energetic riff on the Harold Ramis comedy classic from director Ian Samuels and writer Lev Grossman (based on the latter's short story) brings plenty of freshness to an old idea. Following two teens as they explore one endlessly repeating day together, it boasts a lot of laughs and ample smarts and is a wonderful platform for the talent of its two sparkling up-and-comers, Blockers' Kathryn Newton and American Horror Story's Kyle Allen.

Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar ★★★☆☆

The plot might be just a touch too silly but the gags are predominantly strong in this fun, fantasy-filled caper from the Academy Award-nominated writers of Bridesmaids, who also star. Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo play the middle-aged twosome who head to the titular resort town and get caught up in the antics of Jamie Dornan's Edgar, who is scheming on behalf of the villainous Sharon Gordon Fisherman (also played by Wiig). Wiig and Mumolo bounce amusingly off one another, while Dornan's exuberant musical number is worth the price of rental alone.

Dead Pigs ★★★★☆

This belated release for the first film from Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan gives you the opportunity to see where it all began. There's plenty of promise in this China-set tale which is infused with humour, eccentricity and compassion as it follows a group of seemingly disparate characters – including a pig farmer, waiter, salon owner, rich girl and American architect – as they undergo various trials, with the film gradually revealing the connections between them.

Kajillionaire ★★★★☆

This wonderfully surreal crime caper from Miranda July (Me and You and Everyone We Know) had a brief cinema run in October last year, following its London Film Festival premiere and is now available to watch at home. Evan Rachel Wood is great as the unfortunately named Old Dolio, whose con-artist parents (Richard Jenkins and Debra Winger) have made her life very difficult, and who is struck by a ray of hope in the shape of Gina Rodriguez's delightful Melanie.

The Broken Hearts Gallery ★★★★☆

Another gem that's newly available to rent is this feminism-fuelled romcom from Natalie Krinsky, which also hit cinemas last autumn. It's a film in which the protagonist's friendships (with Molly Gordon and Phillipa Soo) are as enviable and endearing as her burgeoning romance with a handsome guy (Dacre Montgomery from Stranger Things, playing a much less slimy character). The superb Geraldine Viswanathan (another Blockers graduate, who you may have caught in Bad Education recently) is the heroine in question, who is making art and finding her feet in the Big Apple.
