I Care a Lot ★★★★☆

Recalling her superlative work in Gone Girl, Rosamund Pike twists the knife yet again in this black comedy from J Blakeson, the director of The Disappearance of Alice Creed. These two Brits take on the American legal and healthcare systems as they tackle the subject of guardianship, with Pike's devious Marla Grayson assuming legal responsibility for numerous vulnerable seniors and determined to exploit them for every last cent. Peter Dinklage and Dianne Wiest deliver the complications, while Eiza González and Chris Messina also feature.

Pelé ★★★☆☆

An absolute must for football fans, or those oblivious to the titular icon's sporting achievements, this glossy documentary from Ben Nicholas and David Tryhorn is, of course, full of fabulous football. But anyone looking to understand who Pelé is away from the beautiful game, and what being worshipped like a god does to a man, will struggle with the star's reluctance to answer difficult questions, and the film's disappointingly cursory approach to his flaws.

Bad Tales ★★★★☆

Here's an extreme reminder of the impact adult anger and anxiety can have on children, and one that demands we sit up and take notice. Something of a realist fairytale, the latest from Italy's D'Innocenzo brothers follows a number of suburban families, whose hatefulness toward each other is eclipsed only by their cruelty toward their own kids. The winner of the Silver Bear at the 2020 Berlin International Film Festival and a hatful of other prizes, Bad Tales is made with real panache and keen sense of the consequences of our actions.

To Olivia ★★★☆☆

If John Hay's look at the marriage of American actress Patricia Neal and British writer Roald Dahl doesn't quite capture the unique character of its subjects, it has plenty to recommend it. Keeley Hawes is as emotionally credible as ever as Neal, and though Hugh Bonneville's Dahl suffers most from the film's sometimes flat execution he's a solid-enough choice. But the material is very interesting and with Conleth Hill and Geoffrey Palmer adding value and Outlander's Sam Heughan making an excellent Paul Newman (Neal's co-star on Hud, the film which would win her an Oscar) To Olivia is still worth your while.

Stan and Ollie ★★★★☆

This Golden Globe-nominated biopic from 2018 features some inspired casting, with Steve Coogan and John C Reilly playing Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy – the world famous comedy duo, who weren't always able to keep the flame of fame alive. Both men are on top form in a classy and affectionate look at the gruelling nature of showbiz and the challenges of being a double act, from Scottish director Jon S Baird (Filth).
