The Lighthouse ★★★★★

Available to buy and keep on digital, this wonderfully intense two-hander from The Witch's Robert Eggers unfolds in moody monochrome as an old hand and his overstretched assistant wrestle with storms and each other, manning a lighthouse on a remote New England island in the 1890s. Featuring unimprovable work from Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, it's a mysterious, eccentric, nightmarish, drunken and sometimes pretty funny look at the gnawing agony of isolation, with the men teetering on the brink of insanity.

Queen & Slim ★★★★☆

Melina Matsoukas's uber stylish crime drama is also available to own this week. Following an amusingly awkward first date and the shock of a fatal traffic stop, the titular twosome go on the run, road-tripping their way to a romantic connection. With racial politics blazing at the foreground and unforgettable imagery everywhere, it's an impressive feature debut from the director of Beyoncé's 'Formation' video, amongst many others. Although it crosses America, it's the Brits that make it, as leads Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith keep you closely aligned to the couple's predicament.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood ★★★★☆

Tom Hanks received his sixth Oscar nomination for his spin on beloved children's entertainer Fred Rogers in this beautifully judged drama which sees Rogers take cynical journalist and new father Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys) tenderly under his wing, when Vogel is assigned to interview him. From ever-imaginative director Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?, The Diary of a Teenage Girl), it's not your average approach to biographical subject matter, with Rogers taking something of a backseat to Vogel, and Heller steering it well clear of the expected sentimentality.

I'm No Longer Here ★★★★☆

This week's best new Netflix release is a Mexican drama from Fernando Frias with something unusual to say about gangs, as it introduces us to an enigmatic teen (Juan Daniel García) who finds personal expression and a sense of belonging as part of a cumbia-loving collective. We flit between his largely harmless, sociable and culturally nourishing antics in his home town of Monterrey and his new life in New York, where he's alienated and alone. Although violence intrudes alarmingly, it's far from simplistic in its depiction of gang culture and illegal immigration, seeing beyond the headlines.

Election

With Reese Witherspoon currently knocking it out the park in Amazon's Little Fires Everywhere, why not revisit one of her most impactful and enjoyable early roles. In 1999's Election, available for the next few weeks on iPlayer, Witherspoon is ruthlessly ambitious student politician Tracy Flick who gets under the skin of teacher Jim, played by a similarly brilliant Matthew Broderick. The pair infuriate each other spectacularly in a hilarious, Oscar-nominated film from Alexander Payne. Dark, demented and unethical in the extreme, it's a masterclass in the comedy of bitterness and humiliation.
