Ammonite ★★★★☆

While it's sad for such a beautiful film to be denied a big screen release, Francis Lee's BAFTA-nominated follow-up to the highly acclaimed God's Own Country is a must-see on any sized screen. Kate Winslet bags her best role in a decade as overlooked fossil hunter Mary Anning, whose discoveries would make her a palaeontology legend. Saoirse Ronan plays Charlotte Murchison, who would also become famous in the field, in a film that speculates that the two were involved in a romantic relationship, something it portrays rather touchingly.

Tina ★★★★☆

The tumultuous life of Tina Turner is explored in this fascinating documentary by the directors of the Oscar-winning Undefeated, Daniel Lindsay and TJ Martin. Taking us from her traumatic relationship with the abusive Ike Turner, to her incredible solo success and rock reinvention, Tina's story is told by the living legend herself, alongside pals such as Oprah Winfrey, Tina's husband Erwin Bach, and collaborators like songwriter Terry Britten and her biographer Kurt Loder. It's a rousing and eye-opening account of triumphing over adversity.

The Kid Detective ★★★★☆

Available to rent after an extremely limited theatrical run at the end of last year, Evan Morgan's excellent first feature toys winningly with cliches as it introduces us to a former child prodigy, whose detective skills were the talk of his small town until he failed to solve a major mystery. Adam Brody plays the private dick in question as he takes on a new murder case, hoping to restore both his reputation and self-esteem. Funny and ultimately surprisingly subversive, it's an impressive calling card from the debut director and features spot-on work from Brody.

Detroit ★★★★☆

The tenth feature from Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow might be set in 1967 but it remains tragically and persistently pertinent as it deals with an incident of appalling police brutality, committed against a group of Black partygoers, that took place during the Detroit Rebellion. John Boyega, Will Poulter, Jason Mitchell and Anthony Mackie head up the impressive ensemble, while Bigelow and her Hurt Locker cinematographer Barry Ackroyd capture events though an unrelenting, unforgiving lens.

Prevenge ★★★★☆

The third in BFI Player's 'Woman with a Movie Camera Introductions' is from the marvellous Susan Wokoma (Truth Seekers, Year of the Rabbit, Enola Holmes) who has opted to champion Prevenge, the 2016 debut feature from director-star Alice Lowe. Also featuring Kate Dickie, Kayvan Novak and Gemma Whelan, this provocative, blackly comic and rather unique revenge tale sees a heavily pregnant woman embark on a homicidal rampage, and it was shot whilst Lowe was very pregnant herself.
