Make Up ★★★★☆

In her hugely promising first feature, British writer-director Claire Oakley does an awful lot with a little. Make Up is set in an out-of-season holiday park where the caravans have been vacated, with only the staff and residents remaining as the weather turns wild. It sees Ruth (BAFTA winner Molly Windsor) rock up to visit her boyfriend (Joseph Quinn), only to find herself unsettled by the environs, as well as signs that he may have been unfaithful. Before long, Ruth is questioning her own sexuality as one of the workers (Stefanie Martini) catches her eye, and the film takes us deep inside the raging wreck of her head.

The Nightingale ★★★★☆

We're not going to pretend this one is remotely pleasant but, with its searing subject matter and uncompromising approach, it is, nevertheless, an essential watch. Australian director Jennifer Kent follows The Babadook with something even scarier, turning her lens on the horrors of her country's past. Set in 1825 in the British penal colony that's now Tasmania, and starring Aisling Franciosi, Sam Claflin and Baykali Ganambarr, it's the story of a much-abused Irish convict who teams up with a similarly mistreated Aboriginal tracker on her quest for vengeance.

Knives Out ★★★★☆

New to Prime is this absolute hoot of a whodunnit from The Last Jedi and Looper director Rian Johnson, which was one of the most purely enjoyable films of last year. Featuring an all-star cast having an evident ball – including Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis and Toni Collette – it tracks the investigation into the death of a massively successful murder mystery author (Christopher Plummer), with celebrated private investigator Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) hot on the trail.

Under the Silver Lake ★★★☆☆

MUBI have snapped up the divisive third feature from acclaimed director David Robert Mitchell (It Follows, The Myth of the American Sleepover), so here's a chance to see where you stand on this sprawling neo-noir. It stars Andrew Garfield as broke slacker Sam, who becomes intoxicated by Sarah (the always fabulous Riley Keough), a Hitchcockian blonde who he finds swimming in his apartment complex's pool one evening, and whose subsequent disappearance takes him on a very odd journey across LA.

The Salesman ★★★★☆

This Oscar-winning 2016 film from the great Iranian director Asghar Farhadi (A Separation) is typically suspenseful and intriguing in its depiction of domestic turmoil. It follows husband and wife amateur thespians Emad and Rana (Shahab Hosseini and Taraneh Alidoosti), who are starring in a production of Death of a Salesman. When Rana is assaulted in their new home, an incident which is cleverly not shown, Emad's obsessive and insensitive response drives a wedge between them.
