From Somerset House to Hampton Court Palace, where to ice skate this festive season

As the old saying goes, Christmas is a time to strap a pair of bladed boots to your feet and hurtle along a hunk of frozen water until you feel like you're alive. That said, we've rounded-up some of the best places to go ice skating in the city this festive season.

Somerset House
According to their website, Stylist called Somerset House 'London's ice-cool destination', so there's that. By day, it's all ear muffs and bobble hats as people skate around, and by night there is a selection of club nights. This year there's nights hosted by Green Man Festival, independent radio station Soho Radio and international DJ Goldierocks. Ok, that's pretty ice-cool.

Hampton Court Palace
Hampton Court is a fancy place, guys: it's all red Tudor bricks and it comes with a solid view of the Thames. The historic building's festive rink is now open, and once you're done whizzing around the ice, you can fortify yourself with some winter drinks and snacks at the Ice Bar & Cafe.

Westfield London
The Westfield indoor rink has a 160-person capacity, and sessions are an hour long (with 40 minutes on the ice). It's situated right in the heart of the Shepherd's Bush shopping centre, so you can have a session on the ice, then nip and pick up that new scarf for your nan.

JW3
There's plenty of space to bust out fancy moves at this 200 square metre ice rink. Penguins stabilisers are on hand for those who are a bit unsteady and there is hot chocolate and mulled wine to help you warm up.
Mon 3 Dec–Sun 8 Jan 2017

Natural History Museum
This ice rink's been open since October, which is good, since ice skating ought to be indulged in once the last of the summer barbecues have been extinguished. The rink hosts a number of sessions for wheelchair users throughout the season and youngsters can brush up on their skate skills at the Penguin Skate Club. Once you're done on the rink you ought to go inside and look at dinosaurs. Because, dinosaurs.
Until Sun 8 Jan 2017

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland
Everything is supersized at Hyde Park this Christmas with the UK's largest open-air ice rink and London's largest German-style Christmas market. Here's hoping they have the biggest pretzels on sale. Live entertainment at the Winter Wonderland includes The Sooty Christmas Show, The Nutcracker on Ice and Zippo Christmas Circus.
Until Mon 2 Jan 2017

Broadgate Ice Rink
The Broadgate Ice Rink is on until February, which is nice, since most close in January. You can find it nestled in Exchange Square, and there's a rinkside bar and street food hub for a post-skate treat. The more health conscious among you might enjoy Skatercise, a series of morning classes run by Virgin Active.
