Biff To The Future comedy review: In top gear

Those of us who lived through the cult teen films of the 80s are often a little perturbed when revisiting them some 40 years later. Whether it’s the gaping plot holes, glaring misogyny or general daftness, they rarely hold up to the scrutiny of today’s sensibilities (but don’t you dare come at Dirty Dancing). Cleverly, that’s part of the schtick of Biff To The Future, a Back To The Future parody show that doesn’t gloss over the nonsensical science, heavy-handed foreshadowing and (ahem) almost-incest plotline of the original. But it does it from a place of love, and the viewpoint of antagonist Biff Tannen, which creates a fun hour of comedy theatre.

Of course, there’s an elephant in the tent: if you don’t love, or at least know, the original films, much of the clever details will zoom over your head like a DeLorean hitting a steady 88mph. But it’s clear that this packed-out tent is full of fans who show their appreciation at every in-joke and smart take. Joseph Maudsley is a fine performer and his joyful energy, keytar skills and gorgeous audience participation mean this show is actually bearable for Back To The Future virgins as well as a total delight for the trilogy’s legion of devotees.

Biff To The Future, Assembly George Square Gardens, until 24 August, 1.30pm; main picture: Rod Penn.
