Top events and festivals across the country to mark the end of Ramadan

Since the start of June, Muslims have been fasting to mark the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, the month in which the Quran was revealed. Every year, celebrations for Eid al-fitr, ‘the festival of breaking the fast’, kick off at the end of Ramadan, giving Muslims a well deserved occasion to enjoy fine food, music, family gatherings and prayer.

Whether you are one of the three million Muslims in the UK who have been involved in Ramadan, or you just want an insight into one of the most important holidays in the Islamic calendar, here is what’s going on across the UK to mark this joyous occasion.

Glasgow
Organised by The Ark, an innovative hub for Glasgow’s Muslim community, Eid in the Park celebrates the end of Ramadan with music, multi-cultural dances, market stalls and a mountain of Asian fusion food.

Aberdeen
The Alhikmah Foundation is breaking the fast with a party at Mile End High School. Guests can tuck in to a BBQ as well as dishes from around the globe, followed by a selection of desserts and indulgent milkshakes.

Birmingham
Said to be the largest Eid celebrations in Europe, Birmingham’s event Celebrate Eid is expecting more than 60,000 people to get involved. Focussing on community and family, the festival begins at 9am with morning prayers for around an hour. Visitors can then get stuck into laser clay pigeon shooting, fairground rides, rodeo bull riding, mini golf and various tasty food stands.

London
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has arranged post-Ramadan celebrations in London’s Trafalgar Square. The Eid Festival is free to attend and includes a programme of events for families to enjoy. Festival goers can expect a taste of different cuisines from around the world, catwalk shows, henna tattooing, calligraphy and face painting.

To educate young ones about the Islamic culture, Brent Cross Shopping Centre are hosting a day of storytelling with tales told by a renowned theatre group. Celebrations also involve craft activities, calligraphy workshops and face painting.

Manchester
At one of Manchester’s most iconic venues, the Old Trafford Stadium, crowds gather for the celebration of Eid. Food stalls provide visitors with a well earned, hearty meal and the festival’s entertainment includes dodgems and other funfair rides, live music and plenty of children’s activities.

Bradford
Henna art, market bazaars, fairground rides, face painting and a food court are all be part of this year’s Eid celebrations in Bradford. The north’s largest Eid festival, Bradford Moor Park invites the community together to mark the end of Ramadan and raise money for their chosen charity.
