Scotland’s capital really loves fireworks – think end of the festival, Hogmanay, any given Tuesday – but Guy Fawkes Night is always the brightest day in the fireworks calendar. For a big - and free - fireworks display on the beach, head to Musselburgh Fireworks Display at Fisherrow Links at 7pm on Tue 5 Nov. Meadowbank Stadium is hosting its Annual Fireworks Display (Tue 5 Nov) with a superhero theme (so you can get double value for those Halloween costumes) – get there at 6.30pm for a 7.30pm start. Meanwhile, George Watson’s Rugby Club presents two Fireworks Extravaganzas on Sun 3 Nov this year, one at 4pm and another at 7pm. Both shows will offer the full programme which includes the MGA Academy of Performing Arts, the Edinburgh Samba School and the Edinburgh Academy Pipe Band in addition to the fireworks display.

There's plenty going on outwith the city limits as well. Hopetoun House will be putting on a Fireworks Display for all the family, with a full programme of entertainment featuring fire jugglers, a samba band and of course a stunning pyrotechnics display (last entry is 6pm with the show commencing at 6.30pm). In an easterly direction, Haddington (Sat 2 Nov) and Aberlady (Sun 3 Nov) will host displays of the own – if we had to choose between them, we'd opt for the latter, which offers barbecues, hot dogs, mulled wine and sparklers into the bargain.

In Fife, Pittencrief Park will host the Dunfermline Firework Display (Tue 5 Nov), considered one of the best in Scotland. The event will feature music and entertainment as well as appearances from the odd Forth One DJ. Limekilns (Sat 2 Nov), Saline (Sat 2 Nov) and Kirkcaldy (Sun 3 Nov) will host their own spectacular events across the weekend leading up to Guy Fawkes Night, while further north, Perth's Bonfire and Firework Display and both Baxter Park and Lochee Park in Dundee take a more traditional approach, letting their rockets fly on Tue 5 Nov.

Over in the west of the country, the main event will be the huge annual display at Glasgow Green (Tue 5 Nov), with a funfair open from 4pm, entertainment starting at 5.30pm and the display getting underway at 7.30pm.

Outside the city, Strathclyde Park (Tue 5 Nov) will host their own display, as well as a funfair, food, entertainment and a secret guest speaker. Giffnock's display (Tue 5 Nov) doesn't have mystery guests, but does offer food, music and cheerleaders from 7pm. Paisley (Sun 3 Nov), Airdrie (Mon 4 Nov), Cumbernauld (Mon 4 Nov), Coatbridge (Mon 4 Nov) and Kilmarnock (Tue 5 Nov) are getting in on the act too.

Keep in mind to wrap up warm for any events that you are going to, leave the pets and shellsuits at home, and remember, remember that swordfights with sparklers may sound like great fun (as well as a good title for a play), but ultimately result in a trip to A+E.
