Mrs Robinson, the first documentary about the first female president of Ireland, is set to receive a screening in Glasgow this month. The screening will take place at the Glasgow Film Theatre at 8pm on Tuesday 28 January and tickets are available now

Winning the presidential vote in 1990, Mary Robinson famously declared, ‘I was elected by the women of Ireland, who instead of rocking the cradle, rocked the system.’ The documentary from Aoife Kelleher promises to take a thorough look at the highs and lows in Robinson’s career and delve into her personal life.

According to the filmmakers, ‘Filmed over three years, the documentary takes a deep-dive into her career as Robinson discusses the significant controversies throughout her tenure and her own regrets throughout her professional life. The documentary paints a portrait of a singularly influential force whose gift for bridging differences was instrumental in bringing about seismic change in Ireland.’

The documentary is the first to be made about Robinson, who recently stepped down as chair of the Elders, a position she held for six years having taken over from Nelson Mandela. It's one of the two best-performing documentaries at the Irish box office over the last three years, surpassing 100,000 euros, and this screening marks one of the few times it’s been publicly exhibited outside of Ireland.

Screenings will also take place at London’s Kiln Theatre on Wednesday 29 January and MAC Birmingham on Saturday 1 February. The special screenings will take place as part of Irish Film & TV’s (IFTUK) St Brigid’s Film Festival 2025, in celebration of St Brigid’s Day, a day in the Irish calendar committed to showcasing women’s achievements.
