One of Scotland’s most adventurous jazz groups, the Burt MacDonald Quintet are reuniting with Lol Coxhill. A legend of the soprano saxophone, Coxhill has worked with the band on five albums, the latest of which, One Bloke, celebrates the work of another soprano master, Steve Lacy. A key figure in the European free improvisation scene of the 1970s, Coxhill has also made numerous contributions to the world of jazz, rock and experimental theatre. Whether conjuring abstract riddles with electro-acoustic ensemble The Recedents, going punk with The Damned, or adding lyrical flourishes to Shirley Collins’ folk-rock masterpiece No Roses, Coxhill’s laconic tone remains unmistakable.

Guitarist George Burt and saxophonist Raymond MacDonald met while performing with Bill Wells at a Beach Boys tribute concert and the duo has expanded to include bassist George Lyle, vocalist Nicola MacDonald and various guests, including Wells and experimental musicians Daniel Padden and Aileen Campbell, the latter adding the sputterings of a popcorn machine to their improvisations. The band’s aim of combining free playing with song structures drawn from pop, folk and jazz makes them an ideal foil for the mercurial Coxhill. Prepare for wild solos, gorgeous standards and a few surprises.
