Chloe Radcliffe: Cheat comedy review – Nuanced analysis on relationships

Chloe Radcliffe has a secret. It’s a fairly open secret, given that she’s performed almost 30 shows about it in the last month, but it’s scandalous nevertheless. Turns out Radcliffe has cheated in every relationship she’s been in, except one. Over the course of an hour, she lays out her relationship history and how every single one she’s been in has inevitably gone wrong. She traces this back to her parents’ divorce, but simultaneously notes that they’re not to blame for her indiscretions. Cheat is a vehicle for Radcliffe’s meticulous self-examination, and her nuanced analysis leads to interesting viewing.

The California native is an engaging communicator, which makes sense when you learn that she’s a two-time national debating champion (there’s a joke in there somewhere . . . ). Some decent punchlines are peppered throughout, but a few more wouldn’t go amiss to keep the momentum up. Cheat has a touching ending, and Radcliffe’s sincerity clearly comes across when talking about her relationship with her parents.

The show gives her audience a lot to think about within the context of their own relationships, both romantic and otherwise, and it would be fascinating to listen to peoples’ conversations when leaving the venue. This polished hour is certainly worth a watch, unless of course, you’re one of Radcliffe’s ex-boyfriends.

Chloe Radcliffe: Cheat, Pleasance Courtyard, until 27 August, 7.15pm.
