Chris Turner: Rap God ★★★☆☆

You’ve got to hand it to Chris Turner: his self-proclaimed ‘balls to the wall hour of hip-hop comedy from a white British middle-class boy’ has plenty of chutzpah. There’s a large dollop of skill here too; he opens with a freestyle rap taking in almost every member of the audience. The jokes pile up thick and fast as well, from so-good-they’re-bad dad jokes to thoughts on middle-class spices, to a rather droll Arts Council England take-down.

Turner has been coming to the Fringe since 2014 and has built up a loyal audience. They hang on his every bar, and perhaps it’s their confidence in their boy that allows him to easily brush past issues around appropriation, with a highly pertinent nod to Vanilla Ice in a hilarious ‘Palatable Rap’. But above all, Turner can freestyle. Audience suggestions of flowers, opera characters and Robot Wars (this last initiating an open-ended group discussion of favourite competitors) produces a faultless improvisation, with a random word generator finale showing mind-blowing control, timing, imagination and skill. There’s room for more like this rather than the filler of cat pics, but ultimately this is a fast, funny and smart show from a freestyle comic rapper at the top of his game.

Pleasance Dome, until 28 August, 8.10pm.
