Christmas carols and classical concerts in Glasgow and Edinburgh

Featuring Edinburgh Bach Choir, Raymond Gubbay and London Concert Chorus and Orchestra

Want to know where to get your annual traditional Christmas music fix? Here's five of the best carol and classical concerts this season.

The University Carol Service
You'd be hard pushed to find a more magical setting for a carol concert than St Giles' Cathedral. Standing proudly on the Royal Mile, this building was founded in 1120, and is known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh. On Sun 6 Dec, the Edinburgh University Carol Service will take place there, with music from the university's singers accompanied by conductor / organist John Kitchen. This event is a popular one, so get there early: doors open at 5pm.
St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh, Sun 6 Dec, 6pm

Forgotten Carols
Ali Burns has been on the hunt for Britain's long-lost Christmas carols, and by gosh, she may well have found them. Along with some help from reader Tom Pow and SongTribe, this event explores some of the lesser-known Christmas carols she's uncovered.
Scottish Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh, Sat 12 Dec, 7.30pm

Edinburgh Bach Choir Christmas Concert
If you like your Christmas music with a classical edge, head to the Edinburgh Bach Choir's festive concert. This is a carol concert featuring a hefty amount of brass and organ music, as well as highlights from the Messiah.
St Cuthbert's Church, Edinburgh, Sun 13 Dec, 7.45pm

Raymond Gubbay Christmas Festival Carols by Candlelight
To add a little extra something, these carols are all performed in period costumes, so you can pretend you are a Dickensian character just trying to make it through the holidays with a little music. Pieces set to be performed include Darke's 'In The Bleak Midwinter', Corelli's 'Allegro' and 'Pastorale' from Christmas Concerto. It's going to be very classical, and very wiggy.
Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Fri 18 Dec, 7.30pm

Christmas Carol Singalong
Carols were made to be sung by the masses, and that's exactly what happens at this Christmas Eve (Eve) event at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. The London Concert Chorus and Orchestra are playing all the classics, from 'O' Little Town Of Bethlehem' to 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day', and you're invited to belt it out with them.
Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Wed 23 Dec, 3pm
