Christopher KC was a one-liner comic up until he came up against a racist guy from Toronto at a gig in his native Glasgow. The Scottish-Chinese comedian decided enough was enough and this hour is his response. It's an intelligently thought-out rumination on race opening with personal material expressing his exasperation at being very much in the minority in Scotland. There are some familiar but nicely ridiculous scenarios such as the case of mistaken identity with a Singaporean student, and people's inability to get their head around his Glaswegian accent.

Linking into his show title (a pun on the Reni Eddo-Lodge book), KC does indeed end up talking to a predominantly white audience about rice, and there are some handy cooking tips it if you're interested. Elsewhere he plays with culinary stereotypes and how Chinese people seemingly have an innate natural ability for maths. In recent years we've been used to blackface having been called-out but it seems shocking (to a white audience at least) when it's pointed out how often and how casually yellowface has been used in big films without any comeback.

KC is a skilled gagsmith – a highlight of the set is a routine about the British colonisation and ruination of tea – but his delivery does have a tendency, at least on this afternoon, to be a touch low-fi. Sometimes mumbling into the mic, some subtleties are lost on occasion. But his deadpan and somewhat misanthropic demeanour is enjoyable and there's certainly plenty of food for thought here.
