The Scottish Ensemble: Passionate Romantics Starting their winter season with the fire of passion and romance, the SE play the luscious, but infrequently aired Chausson Concert for violin, piano and strings. A great success when first performed, its unusual scoring, originally using string quartet, means that this is a fairly rare opportunity to hear it live these days. City Halls, Glasgow, Thu 4 Oct; Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh, Fri 5 Oct.

Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica Getting Glasgow’s Concert Halls’ highly-anticipated International Classical Season off to a flying start is veteran Latvian violinist and conductor, Gidon Kremer. Visiting Glasgow for the first time, he conducts the international orchestra he founded to foster the talent of outstanding young musicians from the Baltic states. Includes a new piece by Arvo Pärt, dedicated to Kremer as a birthday present earlier this year. City Halls, Glasgow, Wed 17 Oct.

Royal Scottish National Orchestra: Naked Classics What really goes into a piece of music such as Elgar’s enduring Enigma Variations to make it stir the emotions, lift the spirits, inspire and delight us? Explore one of the best pieces of classical music ever composed with presenter Paul Rissmann and conductor Garry Walker, and then listen to it again in a new light. Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, Thu 18 Oct.
