Couplet: Honey Honey Moon Moon comedy review – Earnest and charming musical fun
Straightforward introduction to LGBTQI+ issues from a pair of cute hosts

Sorry, but no matter how much Marnina and Micah protest otherwise, those two are cute. A little whingey, a little cringey, but undeniably charming. Gender-queer, musically talented nerds with nice clean clothes and big white smiles, their songs are cheesy and boppy; safe, easy jokes landing with pitch-perfect comic timing. Think Flight Of The Conchords but it’s a side plot in Girls with musical direction from Ms Rachel. Not making sense? Just wait until you hear ‘Simple Pimple Love’. Earnest in a way that feels distinctively transatlantic, the pair pontificate the nuances of their relationship, wedding planning and traditional gender roles.
Couplet offer a soft introduction to LGBTQI+ issues (they joke about sneaking the subject in), but in all honesty it would probably be a great show to take your nan to if she needs a little light education on the topic. Overall, the story is straightforward, rarely straying into anything unexpected. It’s easy to guess the outcome of their predicament near the start. A laundromat stand-off hints at some genuine conflict, but the tension dissolves almost instantly, smoothed over with a sandwich, no less. None of it is particularly deep, but it’s almost impossible to leave without a smile; and the chorus to ‘Jacquelyn Denfark’ stuck in your brain for life.
Couplet: Honey Honey Moon Moon, Assembly Rooms, until 24 August, 6.25pm; main picture: Jack Morris.
