Crate-digging: Nick Hollywood - Electro Swing

White Mink Electro Swing Speakeasy club set for 2011 Fringe
Nick Hollywood created the White Mink: Black Cotton compilation album, which gave birth to the White Mink Electro Swing Speakeasy events. Making their Fringe debut, Hollywood lets us know what to expect from his set.
Just out on my own label is the latest from Jem Stone ‘Be-Bop 2 Hip Hop’ (Freshly Squeezed). One of the founders of Finger Lickin’ Records, arguably the world’s best known breakbeat label, he also designed all their distinctive artwork. He has a uniquely personal and complete vision for what he does and creates his own animations to accompany his music.
The Correspondents What’s Happened To Soho? (Freshly Squeezed) came out recently and points to exciting new possibilities away from electro-swing, but these guys are all about the live show. They will be joining us for the opening weekend of White Mink and should not be missed.
Drop The Lime ‘Hot as Hell’ (Ministry of Sound) is a strange one. There’s something that really shouldn’t work about rockabilly mixed with house and yet somehow this maverick record is just very, very cool. And very, very wrong all at the same time.
Next Caro Emerald ‘That Man’ (Dramatico), we’ve licensed one of her tracks for the upcoming Vol 3 of White Mink several months ago. It was just as well we got in there when we did as the album has now gone Platinum. ‘That Man’ isn’t the tune we’ve licensed (all will be revealed soon enough) but it is wonderful to see an artist break into the mainstream purely on the strength of their material and word of mouth. Perfect pop music.
Last but by no means least, The Movits! ‘Fel del av gården’ (BD Music) (meaning ‘Wrong Side Of The Yard’) has hardly left my DJ set since I first heard it early last year. They’re a trio of musicians who rap in their native Swedish over a wonderful blend of live swing and hip hop. A brilliantly fresh-sounding record.
Nick Hollywood DJs at White Mink, Voodoo Rooms, 226 0000, Thu 4–Sat 6 Aug, 11.59pm–3am, £10.
