Creepy Boys comedy review: An odd but distinctive pairing

Twin orphans the Creepy Boys have just turned 13 and we’re all invited to their birthday party.  As we enter, they hand out balloons and banners, and an uncertain atmosphere envelops the crowd. The two performers, from Canadian company Scantily Glad Theatre, are maniacally over-friendly and they deliberately discomfit the audience. As it transpires, there’s really not much to worry about but they visibly thrive off the nervous energy in their room.

This Gaulier-infused show rattles along at a fair pace. Apart from a few scenes referencing their adoration of Willem Dafoe (in 2002’s Spider-Man, very specifically) there’s not really a plot; but no matter, as the two performers have sparkling chemistry. They sing daft songs, dance around and generally muck about. A multiple birthing scene is a weird highlight and some routines are gently pushed to test our comfort.

Interaction with the crowd is deliberately forced, particularly a faltering truth-or-dare sequence which interrupts the otherwise propulsive action. A couple of skits allow them to perform solo routines but otherwise this pair are a distinctive double act (they are ‘twins’ after all). It’s an energetic production and a relatively harmless entry for anyone new to clown.

Creepy Boys, Summerhall, until 27 August, 10pm.
