Dane Simpson: Always Was, Always Will Be…Funny comedy review: A title that's true to its word

With 60,000 years of stand-up in his blood, you’re in good hands with Dane Simpson. He brings the energy from the moment the lights dim and quickly draws in the crowd with his comical quips.

While the title of Simpson’s show was (by his own admission) a little haphazardly thrown together, his flow is clearly well thought out and prepared. Despite one or two flat moments, Simpson guides us through the trials and tribulations of being part of his family, especially being the son of Bow Simpson. There is no shortage of hilarity in the relationship between these two blunt, classically Australian men who will stop at nothing for a beer (including major wedding disruption). The enjoyable anecdotes of flights from Wagga Wagga to Australia’s major cities make up a large chunk of the show, although when there’s a limited choice of airlines in your country town, that’s unsurprising.

Dane Simpson

This performance stands out thanks to the immediate comfort Simpson’s warm stage presence creates, especially when tackling invasion re-enactments and the divisive topic of ‘Australia Day’. But, Simpson doesn’t just spout problems: he has the solutions! So, when should the date be celebrated? You’ll have to go to find out…

Dane Simpson: Always Was, Always Will Be…Funny, Drama Llama at Rhino Room, until March 2, 6.20pm.
