David Byrne - Edge Festival Edinburgh

Former Talking Heads leader returns to his groundbreaking roots
As artsy polymaths come, they don’t get much more well-rounded than David Byrne. Over the years, the Dumbarton-born New Yorker has worked on projects involving theatre, dance, photography and opera, and now in his late 50s, he’s showing no signs of running out of inspiration. Although Byrne stepped out the limelight for a few years there, the technology-embracing, design-obsessed musical genius can’t seem to turn the tap off those creative juices and will appear here almost 20 years after the iconic Talking Heads broke up.
His current tour features performances of Everything that Happens Will Happen Today, a new album written with Brian Eno. It was a long-distance collaboration, involving emailing back and forth between their New York and London homes. Fusing gospel, dreamy electronica and frantic percussion, it was the first project Eno and Byrne had worked on since their 1981 album, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, often credited as the birth of ambient music. If his live shows running up to Edinburgh are anything to go by – where a tutu-wearing Byrne puts on up to four encores per night – it promises to be a spectacle and a half.
