Demi Adejuyigbe Sells Out comedy review: Unpredictable musical mayhem
Demi Adejuyigbe’s Fringe return is full of Nickelodeon theme tunes, plot twists and philosophical musings
Magic tricks, monsters and mega-corporation robots all add to the fun in Demi Adejuyigbe Sells Out as the British American comedian, whose writing credits include The Good Place and The Late Late Show, exposes all the ways in which he has sold his soul to the comedy scene. Before the show starts, we’re treated to a brilliant mash-up of hip hop, the SpongeBob SquarePants theme tune and lots more besides. Adejuyigbe takes the audience in with a not-so-seasonal song about Santa Claus that takes a dark yet tickling turn. Then the show becomes a soundtrack to brighten any mood as he uses his musical skills, whimsical silliness and unexpected twists to concoct a marvellous hour, including a moment in which he discards his comic hat to reveal the true motivations behind this hour, which adds a lovely personal touch.
As well as veering more toward American sensibilities, there’s slight lack of depth at play here that may make fans of gallows humour left a little wanting, Adejuyigbe has accomplished comedic timing to match his instrumental prowess. So whether he is playing Dracula, Bond or himself, Demi Adejuyigbe proves to be a wonderful growing talent on the Fringe scene.
