Discover the best of Scottish music with Dundee Rep's 3M Mixtape

This new music project consists of 12 live sessions and features both original material and covers
One of the biggest cultural absences during the pandemic has been the lack of live music — a fact that's not escaped leading theatre Dundee Rep, who have put their heads together to do something about it.
They're on a mission to bring music events to the fore and have just announced further details for their innovative new music project 3M Mixtape. The Mixtape consists of 12 live sessions which aim to reignite our love for live performance, capturing just what we have all missed during the past year, and introducing us to some fabulous new Scotland-based artists in the process.
Beginning this Sunday 30 May with Reuben Joseph singing his original song 'Red', the next 12 weeks will feature a release of a filmed live session from the Mixtape at 6pm every Sunday. Each session has been carefully shot according to Covid-19 guidelines and they combine covers chosen by the artists themselves with original material.
Alongside Reuben in this musical line-up are Eleanor Kane, Christina Modestou, Sally Clay and Martin Quinn, amongst many others. They will perform songs by Portishead, Lulu and Boy George, and from the musicals SIX and Waitress, while there will be special guest appearances from some of the original artists, including Boy George himself.
3M Mixtape is the brainchild of actors Dawn Sievewright (Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour, Glasgow Girls) and John McLarnon (My Left Right Foot, Local Hero) who explain: 'We've all made our own version of a mixtape, be it cassette, CD or Spotify playlist and from an idea that was born in our kitchen during lockdown through a desperate need for creative connection, we are delighted – with the support and guidance of Dundee Rep – to finally get to share it with an audience!'
The pair worked in creative collaboration with Dundee Rep's artistic director Andrew Panton. The live sessions represent an eye-catching visual spread of Scotland, as they were filmed during lockdown in locations around the country, including Pollock Park and Bluevale Boxing Gym in Glasgow, Magdalen Bandstand in Dundee and Bongo Club in Edinburgh.
Andrew Panton sums up the purpose and significance of this project: 'The past year has been devastating for our freelance arts sector. Here at the Rep we have a strong focus on nurturing emerging and established talent to experiment and take creative risk and there's never been a more important period for us to prioritise this work. 3M Mixtape is a celebration of people, place and musical storytelling and it's been a creative joy to collaborate with Dawn, John and some of the very best Scottish talent.'
