The Edinburgh Art Festival returns in July, running for most of August and providing a broad programme of art events during the festival period.

There are pop-up exhibitions all over the city. St Cuthbert's Church is a suitable site for Three Women, Bill Viola's brilliantly simple but haunting video about family, time and transformation, which is on show until Sat 1 Sep. At the Scottish Arts Club, art collective 6°WEST presents The Erraid Residency, a set of unique postage stamps relating to the life and work of Robert Louis Stevenson and his connection to the tidal island of Erraid off the coast of Mull. Kate McMillan's The Past is Singing in our Teeth, at the Arusha Gallery, mixes video, sculpture and sound performance in an investigation of art and memory.

The Commissions Programme includes a slew of works with a performative element. Artist Ruth Ewan collaborates with magician Ian Saville on Sympathetic Magick, a series of magic performances with a political edge, being performed by Saville and other magicians at various locations around the city. Syrian violinist/composer Ali Moraly performs Quatrain for Solo Violin after Paul Celan's Death Fugue, a contrapuntal work, in Trinity Apse Church Nave, as part of the festival commission work by Ross Birrell & David Harding.

There are talks, discussions, tours, workshops, Art Late sessions and dozens of kids' events throughout the month of the festival. It all kicks off with the keynote lecture by Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset at the Scottish National Gallery on Fri 27 Jul, in which the two artists discuss their practice as a collaborative duo.
