A housing development in Edinburgh joins an art centre in Orkney and architect Zaha Hadid’s Maggie’s Centre in Fife in the running for a top architecture prize.

The 2007 Andrew Doolan Award, which is organised by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS), usually recognises major projects commissioned by businesses or local government.

The award was won by the Scottish Parliament in 2005

However the £2.37 million Prices Gate development, built by Bryant Homes overlooking the Pentland Hills, has made the shortlist.

The development was designed by Scottish architect Malcolm Fraser, who said its inclusion should encourage others to make interesting modern architecture.

The Pier Arts Centre in Orkney by Reiach & Hall also made the shortlist, as did the Bridge Arts Centre in Glasgow’s Easterhouse, which was designed by Gareth Hoskins Architects.

Architect and member of the jury Richard Murphy said: “We have got plenty of talented architects in Scotland.

“What we need to do is foster an architectural culture, from clients like local authorities, universities and banks, and get them interested and excited and ambitious and aspirational for architecture.”
