Edinburgh Fringe - LGBT Highlights

PREVIEW ROUND-UP
There’s a fine selection of LGBT-interest shows buried deep within the mammoth cultural pick’n’mix that is the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. If it’s an evening of ribald humour and potential humiliation you seek, you could do worse than spend a night in the company of ruthlessly sharp-tongued air hostess Pam Ann (pictured), who will treat you to an hour of Terror at 41,000 Ft (Assembly Rooms). Scott Capurro will be aiming to finally clinch that TV or movie deal with his typically provocative new show Scott Capurro Goes Deeper (Underbelly), while the wise and wicked Stephen K Amos performs a double whammy with his stand-up hour Find the Funny (Pleasance Courtyard) and a weekend chit-chat and variety show (Gilded Balloon) to rival the cosy banter of Nicholas Parsons.
Over at the theatre end of proceedings there’s an embarrassment of LGBT-friendly fare. Australia’s Out Cast Theatre take on the online dating phenomenon in Adventures of Butt Boy and Tigger (Pleasance Dome), while Stain Entertainment’s Regretrosexual (Sweet Grassmarket) focuses on one man’s struggle to fess up to his new girlfriend that he’s been gay for the past two years. Meanwhile, Patrick Wilde directs a new production of his popular 1992 coming out drama What’s Wrong With Angry? (C, Chambers Street).
Cross-cultural friendships are explored in About Turn’s Outward Bound (Rocket @ Demarco Roxy Art House), which deals with a relationship between a gay man and a Jewish woman, and Faithful (George Square Theatre), a rehearsed reading of a new musical about a gay teenager and his female Muslim best friend.
Other musical highlights include an evening of sublime vocal prowess from the London Gay Men’s Chorus, who head north with their show, Far From Kansas (Rocket @ Demarco Roxy Art House). However, if it’s a good, old-fashioned night of glitter, outrageous costumes, gigantic wigs, laughter and lip-synching, the only show in town comes courtesy of the multi-talented ‘midwife of London’s alternative drag scene’, Jonny Woo – International Woman of Mr ‘E’ (Gilded Balloon Teviot).
