Monsters University

The Edinburgh International Film Festival has a history of fruitful collaboration with Pixar - the fest was where Wall-E, Toy Story 3 and Brave received some of their earliest UK screenings. That tradition continues with this prequel to 2001's Monsters Inc, in which Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Goodman) meet for the first time on the grounds of the titular campus.

Jurassic Park 3D

Maybe one for your more steely-nerved youngsters, this one, but there's no denying Jurassic Park has enough large-scale spectacle to make it worth a return to the cinema. It's been given a thorough going over as well, to make sure those CGI effects - groundbreaking when the film was first released in 1996 - are still just as jaw-dropping in IMAX 3D.

Comrade Kim Goes Flying

The first Western-financed feature film made entirely in North Korea is a brightly-coloured comic adventure about a preternaturally talented acrobatic coal miner who goes to the big city in pursuit of her dream: becoming a circus superstar. Grown-ups can ponder the political subtext such a film might contain; kids can simply enjoy the giddy, gaudy action on display.

Fantastic Voyage

The EIFF's retrospective on American director Richard Fleischer wisely stops short of some of his later, more questionable output (Mandingo, Red Sonja, Amityville 3D), focusing instead on his middle period from 1952-1973. Slap bang in the middle is this 1966 sci-fi adventure, in which a submarine is shrunk to microscopic size and injected into the human bloodstream.
