Edinburgh's Christmas: A Festive Frivolity in the heart of Scotland’s capital

As the chill of winter descends, Edinburgh’s historic city centre is set to illuminate from Friday 17 November – Saturday 6 January with Christmas Markets, family funfairs, an ice rink and much more. Popular amongst many locals and tourists alike, Edinburgh’s Christmas promises seven weeks of joyous celebration for all.

Head to Festive Family Funfair located in West Princes Street Gardens, which will boast rides and attractions aplenty, or head down for a cup of hot chocolate or mulled wine at The Ross Bandstand where you can discover a Diwali celebration on 19 November as well as a series of community-led live concerts, ceilidhs, silent discos and more hosted across four weekends.

Head over to George Street, home to market stalls and a large-scale covered Christmas Ice Rink where skaters can glide beneath the Georgian skyline while staying sheltered from the elements. Nearby St Andrew’s Square will be home to Santa’s Stories (a magical children’s storytelling experience) and The Festival of Kindness, hosted by local homelessness charity Social Bite who provide essential support to those in need. Afterward, visitors can enjoy the warmth of food stalls and traditional fairground rides or shop for unique gifts at Local Motive’s Castle Street Christmas Market.

On the east end of Princes Street, get a spectacular birds-eye view of Edinburgh from atop the Big Wheel or if you’re more of a thrill-seeker, rides like the Helter Skelter or the Starflyer may be more up your street. Meanwhile, nestled by the Scott Monument with a backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, a treasure trove of festive delights await at the East Princes Street Gardens Christmas Market. Around 70 stalls showcase the best of local and international craftsmanship, offering everything from handmade gifts to delectable treats.
