Edinburgh’s Christmas returns with festive fun in the heart of the city
Rides, markets and festive magic come to Princes Street Gardens and George Street

Christmas officially arrives in Edinburgh this Saturday, as East and West Princes Street Gardens are once again transformed into a sparkling celebration of the festive season, with George Street’s festivities opening on Thursday 20 November.
In East Princes Street Gardens, the skyline is lit up by the famous LNER Big Wheel and the soaring Around The World Starflyer, both offering spectacular views over the city and beyond. The Traditional Christmas Market returns with its rows of wooden chalets packed with handcrafted gifts, festive decorations and tempting treats, from sweet indulgences to hearty winter bites.

A short hop into West Princes Street Gardens, and visitors can say hello to the big man himself as part of Santa’s Stories, now enjoying a picturesque new home beneath Edinburgh Castle. In residence until Christmas Eve, it’s the perfect opportunity for little ones to share their Christmas wish lists. Relaxed sessions are available for any children who might prefer a quieter experience. Thrill-seekers have a variety of fun fair rides from which to choose, including The Matrix and Techno Power, plus traditional rides such as dodgems, waltzer and fun house.
Next week, George Street will join the celebrations with the return of the hugely popular Ice Rink With Emirates (which also offers relaxed sessions) and the icy thrills of the Polar Ice Bar which this year is themed The Ice Queen’s Castle and features a brand-new Family Ice Experience offering even more festive sparkle.

Also joining in the festive fun, the Ross Bandstand plays host to a variety of community events, taking place over the four weekends leading up to Christmas. Highlights include The Red Hot Chilli Pipers on Saturday 29 November, headlining a free day celebrating the country’s culture, craft and community spirit; on Sunday 30 November, celebrate St Andrew’s Day with a special Family Ceilidh hosted by The Sensational Jimi Shandrix Experience; on Saturday 6 December, Edinburgh Sings presents an afternoon of free festive music performed by community and performance choirs; the Silent Disco Christmas Cracker takes place on Saturday 13 December, with three festive music channels.
