Making her Edinburgh Festival debut this year is the young Welsh-born flautist Emily Beynon, who is currently principal flute of Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. In a virtuoso programme, scheduled to finish with Borne’s flamboyant Carmen Fantasy and will almost certainly be carried on by demand for an encore or two, Beynon appears as part of the Queen’s Hall morning series with regular pianist Andrew West, playing Prokofiev and the Sonata for flute by Poulenc, as well as Debussy’s mesmeric solo flute Syrinx.

In line with Festival Director Brian McMaster’s policy that the Queen’s Hall’s popular 11am slot should provide the opportunity to hear a mix of well known artists alongside new names, Beynon’s introduction to the Festival lies between recitals by pianist Steven Osborne and Finnish soprano Soile Isokoski. Both great festival favourites, it would be surprising if Beynon isn’t joining them soon as a regular visitor. (Carol Main)
