Emily Wilson: Fixed ★★★★☆

Even watching from the safety of your living room, it’s always been clear that TV shows such as The X Factor can do harm. For every newcomer catapulted to stardom, there are thousands of others whose brief brush with fame leaves them bruised and burned. New Jersey-born Emily Wilson is one such victim. But although it’s taken a decade for her to feel strong enough to talk about it, she’s now squeezing every droplet of humour out of the experience.
At the age of 15, all Wilson wanted was to be a famous singer. That, and to appear on Fox News, the bastion of free speech her deeply Republican family worshiped daily. A fast-paced mix of online footage posted by an adolescent Wilson pre-X Factor USA, scenes from the audition and show, and live original songs, Fixed takes cringe to a whole new level.
Now a graduate of New York University (where she had all that right-wing nonsense knocked out of her) and stand-up comedian, Wilson is sufficiently self-aware and resilient enough to look back at her younger self. She’s also a pretty good singer, so those original compositions are not only hilarious but good to listen to. Along with co-writer and director Sam Blumenfeld, Wilson has shaped this show perfectly, drip-feeding us information and visuals at just the right moment for maximum comedic pay-off. And her easy way with the audience means we’re all cringing with her, not at her.
Pleasance Courtyard, until 28 August, 10.25pm, 29 August, 7pm.
