Emma Sidi: Character Breakdown

Promising solo character debut with curious accents

Emma Sidi walks on stage and becomes Brita. This stonewash denim jacket-clad girl speaks in an accent that sounds like a mix of eastern European, northern English and just plain made up. It's an unusual way to open a character-based comedy which relies on physical and vocal skill, as some audience members undoubtedly wonder if she’s failing to master Brita's dialect.

Rest assured though, Sidi knows what she's doing. After introducing us to other characters (an anti-people person working in new media and a Spanish lecturer-turned-raconteur for two), she returns to the original character. Brita addresses the elephant in the room: yes, the accent is bizarre. Oh ye of little faith, she was doing it on purpose all along.

It's a bold move, but then again Sidi's show is full of them. From delivering a sketch entirely in Spanish to performing an energetic dance to an Ibiza-esque pop song, Sidi is not afraid to take risks. The transitional moments between sketches need sharpened, and the movement pieces which signal the end of a scene are somewhat misplaced. But overall, this is a promising solo debut from an exceptionally talented character actor.

Pleasance Courtyard, 556 6550, until 31 Aug, 8pm, £7–£9 (£6.50–£8.50).
