National Novel Writing Month officially kicks off on the first, and just in case the title didn't tip you off, that means you have to write a novel. In a month. People all over the nation do it. Got it? Good. Obviously, there is a little more to it, and that's why we've compiled this handy, informative article telling you all you need to know. We're good like that.

What's it called?
Well, National Novel Writing Month. I feel like we've covered this already. But that title's a little long to be saying for 30 days, so some hep cats on call it NaNoWriMo. It may sound like a type of specialist yoga, but no, it's a literary movement.

What do I have to do?
Write a novel. I mean, how is that not clear? More specifically, the aim is to write a 50,000 novel by 11:59pm on Mon 30 Nov.

Who can do it?
Anyone who has ever wanted to write a novel and has basic literacy skills.

Where do I do it?
Wherever you like, pal. You may hear some folk talking about 'Camp NaNoWriMo', but that is a virtual retreat, or a forum if you will, where you can track your progress online, chat to other folk having a bash at it, and get some support from other writers. That said, if you prefer human contact over the harsh glow of a computer screen, you can attend a 'write in' with other people in your area, details of which can be found on the NaNoWriMo site.

Right. So how does it work?
Firstly, you create an online profile using this website, so that like-minded people can connect with you, and so that you can keep track of your progress. After this, you write until you hit 50,000 words. Then you do a mini fist bump.

How do I get started?
Check out the preparation resources online. There's advice from authors, tweet chats, webinars and writing exercises to get you going. But the most important thing to remember is just to write. Just keep writing until something comes. Write, write, write.
