Glasgow sextet The Moth and the Mirror do a dark, decorative brand of folkie alternative rock that’s seen them score support slots for the likes of Kate Nash, Maria Taylor and Tilly and the Wall, and perform at T in the Park and Hydro Connect. Earlier this year they released a split single and embarked on a Scottish tour as part of the Kopparberg Collective Singles Club. Bassist Kevin McCarvel gives us their chat.

You all hail from the four corners of Scotland, non?

Yeah – Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Fort William, Perth. I’m from Lewis.

And people might find a few of your faces familiar from other bands?

We all have heavy involvement with other musical projects. Gordon (Skene, guitarist) plays with Make Model; Louis (Abbott, guitarist) is in the Brother Louis Collective. Stacey (Sievwright, singer and guitarist) used to play with Arab Strap and the Reindeer Section.

What sort of influences shape The Moth and the Mirror’s output?

Five of us are classically trained musicians, all of us like many many different things. I’m personally into Japanese psychedelic rock and noise stuff; some of the others are into classical jazz, folk. Icelandic bands are a heavy influence. There’s a big mish mash that comes together in our sound.

You’re pressing on with an album next?

Yeah, we’re going build a temporary studio for a couple of weeks in a house in the country and really try and capture the essence of the band in a rural setting that we’re all comfortable with, no pressures.
