Fatiha El-Ghorri’s Best Newcomer nomination might seem odd for a panel show regular and Taskmaster star. But despite her rising profile, this is her first full Fringe show. Fans of her TV persona will know her swagger and fondness for an F-bomb, and she lives up to it here. El-Ghorri plays on the dissonance between society’s expectations of a hijab-wearing Muslim woman and her potty mouth. But the swagger has an edge of self-defence too. ‘I know I’m mouthy’, she says, ‘but I have to be tough’, recounting some Islamophobic incidents.

El-Ghorri has a long list of people she wants to fight, chatty audience members included and some jokes end with a variation of ‘I’ll mess you up bruv’, which does eventually lose its bite. There’s more to her than the tough persona though. The hour is front-loaded with gags before turning serious as she discusses her recent cancer diagnosis and the treatment’s lasting effects. There’s still plenty of humour throughout, with endless brilliant anecdotes about her huge family, and some observations about Muslim dating apps are gold. It’s rough around the edges but Fatiha El-Ghorri’s voice is distinctive and it’s easy to see why there’s such a buzz around her.
