Festival Of Politics returns with big ideas taking the stage

Come August, everywhere in Edinburgh becomes a venue. Living rooms, church halls and pubs throw open their doors to performers and speakers… and the Scottish Parliament is no exception. The Festival Of Politics rolls up to Holyrood with two days of ticketed talks, free exhibitions, workshops and entertainment, and a programme tackling topics that range from hopeful to enraging. One highlight to look out for is The Soft Power Of Culture And Sport, which explores how festivals, sporting events and the arts can build bridges where traditional diplomacy often can’t. The discussion will consider how consuming art and cheering on our poorly performing sports stars can actually strengthen international relationships, especially at a time of growing global tension.

Closer to home, A Scotland Of More Homes: Growing Prosperity And Shrinking Poverty asks why, despite years of political promises, Scotland remains in a housing crisis. With homelessness at record levels, home ownership falling and private rents continuing to rise, the panel will explore whether bold political reform is finally on the horizon. Alongside these talks, visitors can also dip into free exhibitions and installations such as One Hundred Voices, an immersive audio experience (pictured) created as part of the Caring Scotland project, sharing the experiences of people who have grown up in Scotland’s care system. And if there’s anyone in your party who’s a little bit more into story time than Question Time, a free crèche will be available on the festival’s opening day, with places bookable in advance.
