Film in the City returns: free outdoor cinema coming to Edinburgh

Grassmarket and St Andrew Square to host interactive, family-friendly screenings in June
Free outdoor cinema is coming to the heart of city in June, thanks to a partnership between This is Edinburgh and Edinburgh International Film Festival. And in case that didn’t sink in the first time, yes, we really did say free.
Screenings take place in the Grassmarket and St Andrew Square, with the former hosting an opening weekend Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June of high-kicking, quick steppin’, dance-along films including family favourites such as Mary Poppins, Dirty Dancing and Mamma Mia. Bring your comfy shoes, because audience participation is positively encouraged.
The following weekend the screen moves to St Andrew Square Garden for a mix of cult classics, cinematic gems and recent blockbusters. Kicking of Friday 12 June with as good a triple bill as you’ll find anywhere: Flash Gordon, Guardians of Galaxy (dance off, bro!) and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Also playing over the Saturday and Sunday at St Andrew Square, where screenings start before lunch, is Brave, Life of Pi, Ghost, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and The Princess Bride. There’s a little bit of something for everyone, all you need is a blanket, snacks and, with a bit of luck, sun cream.
This is the fourth year This is Edinburgh has brought outdoor screenings to Edinburgh, and it’s a perfect build up to the 69th EIFF, which gets underway 17 June.
