First Word: Limahl from Kajagoogoo

First record you ever bought
‘Yellow River’ by Christie. It was no’1 when I was a wee lad - I think it’s got summat to do with a war – a haunting, poignant thing…

Last time you were chatted up
Ha ha! Every gig by a drunk female or two.

First film you saw that really moved you
Joan of Arc starring Ingrid Bergman, I started crying when they sentenced her to burn at the stake – my dad walked in and started making fun of me, I was about nine years old in Wigan ;-(

Last lie you told
I frequently lie about my age ;-)

First movie you ever went on a date to
It was probably Jungle Book with my mum’s friend’s daughter Julie when I was about 14 – she turned out to be a lesbian – was it something I said? ;-)

Last time you cried
Watching the life story of ‘The Carpenters’ last week on BBC 2 – they showed the coffin coming out of the small church whilst playing the opening lines to ‘yesterday once more’ – I still love Karen’s voice, the tone was breathtaking. Dead at 32 – incredible!!

First thing you do when you’ve got time off work
Cycle, swim, sit outside at Starbucks people watching, call mum in Wigan ;-)

Last great meal you cooked
Ha, that’s a laugh. I cannot cook to save my life – I microwave everything or it’s simply scrambled eggs on toast. I’m a veggie so eggs and cheese are always plentiful in fridge. Grilled Veggie sausages with ketchup – does that count as cooking lol ;-)

Last extravagant purchase you made
Macbook Pro Laptop – 2k OUCH !!

First crush
I had a sort of mini-crush / fascination on an actor from an American 70’s sci-fi series called The Champions – I had a vivid dream about him when I was about 12 years old but didn’t understand it. He was handsome and had the three main characters had special powers. It’s always about special powers innit? lol ;-)

Last book you read
Haven’t read a book for years – keep buying them and never getting round to reading them – I never seem to have the time. Always on that Macbook Pro you see.

First great piece of advice you were given
Don’t smoke !!

Last time you were starstruck
Meeting Debbie Harry on a German TV show last year – I had performed ‘Too Shy’ with ‘live’ vocal and as I walked past her dressing room she actually came out and complimented me and we chatted for a bit. In America, ‘Too Shy’ is very much considered a pop classic so she’s probably very familiar with it. She looked like she’d had a little nip/tuck BUT it didn’t spoil anything. She was brimming with confidence. I asked for a photo and she kindly obliged ;-)

First thing you’d do if you ran the country
Build more cycle lanes and get more people on them taking exercise – after all, aren’t we the fattest nation in the EU no. I’d also make it compulsory that every car test includes two days riding a cycle round a busy city/town so they understand JUST how dangerous it is for us. I ride a bike in London and have had a few close calls. Many car drivers are NOT cycle friendly enough ;-(

Last meal on earth - what would it be
Ooh something naughty, maybe one of ‘The Golden Girls’ favourites, double fudge, chocolate cheescake. Yummy !!

First song you’ll sing at karaoke
‘Delilah’ by Tom Jones of course.

Last time you exploited your position to get something
Yesterday! I flew to Barcelona for a TV show in economy class so called my BA contact and got upgraded hey hey. U know wot they say, it’s not what u know, it’s who you’ve slept with. lol ;-)

First time you realised you were famous
Leaning over the cheese counter in my local shop in north London with sleep lines and hair all over the place, still hadn’t brushed my teeth and looking worse for wear from celebrations the night before after first appearing on TOTP – then I heard this little voice, 'excuse me, could I get your autograph?' I smiled and dutifully signed but realised quickly, I was going to have to get a hat to hide the trademark hair when needing to be incognito – it’s a plan that still works today.

Last time someone criticised your work
Couple of weeks ago in the Daily Mirror – ooh those tabloids can be so kind... NOT !!

First three words your friends would use to describe you
Funny, finicky, friendly.

Last time you made an impulse buy and regretted it
I bought an air conditoner unit about 3 years ago when we were having that incredible six week heatwave but two days later it came to an end and I’ve never used it since. Typical! I’m going to sell it on ebay this year.

First concert you ever attended
Cliff in about 1979 in London. What a pro. That vibrato on ‘Miss you Nights’ is even better than The Bee Gees – I also love ‘Carrie’ and ‘Devil Woman’. Poptastic stuff.

First thing you think of when you wake up in the morning
The toilet, of course! ;-)

Last thing you think of before you go to sleep
I try not to think before sleep otherwise it keeps me awake – I usually stick on an episode of The Golden Girls which makes me laugh and have nicer dreams – I highly recommend it!

Kajagoogoo play The Ferry, Glasgow, Fri 18 Sep.
