Five new gins to try this summer

As the gin boom helps spirit revenues top beer, we identify some of the freshly distilled bottles you might not have heard of

We started talking about the 'ginnaissance' back in 2010, when a number of carefully crafted gins began appearing in bars, putting the likes of Bombay Sapphire, Gordons and Tanqueray to the back of the shelf. Now, here we are, seven years later, and the continued gin boom means that the government are making more money from spirit sales than beer for the first time ever.

Why is it proving so popular? Different botanicals add their own unique flavours to the spirit, meaning no G&T tastes the same; try Caorunn with its blend of 11 different botanicals (including rowan berries, dandelion leaves and coul blush apples), followed by a rose and cucumber infused Hendrick's and you're in for two completely different drinking experiences.

With new gin brands launching every week, there's a whopper of a list to work through, so to get you started, we've picked five of the best up and coming gins to try this summer.

One Gin

The One Brand supports some of the most vulnerable people around the world by pouring their profits into clean water projects across the world. Earlier this year, they expanded their portfolio with a new craft gin, distilled with 10 botanicals from across the globe, including sage from the grounds of the distillery, to give it a British twist.

In addition to new packaging featuring hand-drawn illustrations, the gin company have added a new Navy Strength edition of their Darnley's Spiced Gin, inspired by their ancestor, Sir Rosslyn Wemyss, an Admiral of the Fleet who commanded ships across the globe in the early part of the 20th century.

LoneWolf Gin V3

Frustrated by other brands claiming to be craft spirits but not doing things that would be regarded as craftsmanship, the BrewDog team decided to launch their own gin and vodka. Their V3 gin is 100% malt barley spirit with juniper, coriander, angelica root, cardamom, pink peppercorn, Thai lemongrass, Kaffir lime leaf, mace, almond, fresh lemon peel, fresh red grapefruit peel, lavender and Scots pine needles.

Zymurgorium Marmalade Manchester Gin

Manchester's oldest jam-makers, Duerr's, have teamed up with Zymurgorium, a meadery, brewery, distillery and cidery to create the Marmalade of Manchester gin. Lime, lemon, coriander, grains, Madagascan bourbon vanilla, and eight balancing botanicals are mixed with the marmalade to create this zesty drink. Finally, an excuse to have gin for breakfast.
